The Giant Spade

Mote Park, County Roscommon. 2025.

(collaboration with Vici Waterstone)

Bronze casting of 1920’s style Irish spade. Patina.

This work honours the generations of farmers and bogland workers in Roscommon whose labour shaped both land and community. Their work, often unrecognized, was vital: tilling soil, cutting turf, and sustaining households through resilience and perseverance.

It is a reminder of the hard physical effort that supported Irish livelihoods for centuries. Beyond survival, their contribution formed the backbone of cultural identity and continuity in the region; a testament to the quiet but essential role of those who worked closest to the land.
